Success Habits - Being Teachable
Today’s important topic and vital habit for success is being teachable!
We all have preconceived ideas and beliefs that can quite honestly be a stumbling block to our progress in business. We MUST remain teachable as long as we are still journeying towards our destination … our goals and our dreams fulfilled.
In my earlier article, Cycle of Success, I mentioned how important it was to chose a mentor that you can trust implicitly. Once you have found a mentor that meets this criteria it is vital that you follow your mentor’s lead and instruction at all times.
It is an excellent plan to imagine that you are starting with a completely blank sheet and that you know nothing about the subject. Prepare your mind to be like that dry sponge ready to take in every morsel of information that will contribute to your success in your business.
Know that you DO have to attend every training call and event. That you make a decision to give this a top priority in your business timetable. Be bold enough to voice any questions you might have on these calls and at any live events be bold and approach the leadership with questions and get to know them.
To become a great leader you first have to be a great student. Soak in as much as you can on a daily basis. Do take the initiative for your own learning and growth. If you come across something that is totally new to you … be very careful NOT to shrink back and avoid it! But instead be willing to learn this new skill.
Be aware at all times what you are telling yourself in your mind, do ask lots of questions if you do not understand something. Your mentor should always be willing to answer any questions and in fact be delighted you are so eager to learn.
The learning process in fact never stops in business, as technology advances at a pace and new trends appear it is of the utmost importance to be ready flexible in your approach and to be able to adapt quickly to the marketplace. So that you remain relevant and up to date.
This does not necessarily mean you are going to swop and change the way you do business every time a new trend or method comes along. But being ready to change when the growth of your business shows a trend in the wrong direction! In fact on this point you only change if you are not currently getting the result you want. You don’t change if you are getting the results you are looking for.
Be willing at all times to step out of your comfort zone. If you mentor is asking for a volunteer to speak or to testify be the first to volunteer and share. Always prepare well and share with your mentor what you plan to say, being ready to take on your mentors advice.
Whenever you are listening to your mentor, training call or attending an event. It is important to listen as a student with one ear and with the other ear listen as a teacher so you can learn the skills of teaching and this will help you build up your team. Your goal is adopt all the skills of your mentor – why – because that is the level of success you are looking for!
